Protein treatments are important to include in any Natural hair regimen (whether your hair is healthy or experiencing breakage), in order to add strength, structure and/or elasticity to the hair strand. It is essential you have a balance of moisture and protein to keep your hair at its optimum health.

Our hair is made up of around 90% keratin (aka protein) so it’s very important to restore any protein you naturally lose through manipulation, chemicals (e.g. hair colour) and heat (either with appliances or direct sunlight). I’ve never understood when people say their hair doesn’t like protein because they’re effectively saying that their hair doesn’t like what it is mostly made up of. What that is likely a result of is that they have used a protein treatment that is too strong for their hair’s needs or they are using the wrong type of protein – all which can leave their hair brittle and dry.

Not all protein treatments are the same in terms of their strength. Not all proteins are the same either. Some proteins increase the hair’s ability to absorb moisture, whereas others strengthen the hair. To find out which proteins do what, click here. The strength of the treatments you use should depend on your own hair’s individual needs. Note: The higher the protein is listed in the ingredients list, the more there is of it in the product compared to the ingredients listed after it.

Tailor made for you UK-natural beauties; we’ve only listed those that are easily accessible in the UK, and where you can buy them from 🙂 If you have any other faves, be sure to add it in the comments box below!

It’s recommended that you use protein treatments once every 4-6 weeks – and it is ALWAYS followed by the moisturizing deep treatment to restore softness and elasticity in your hair. (For damaged hair, use twice a month). When using a protein conditioner, always use a clarifying shampoo so that you fully remove any product residue that your hair cannot remove by using gentle cleansers. That way, your protein treatment will be able to take effect on a clean slate and your hair will be able to absorb the protein properly (click here to see our recommended Clarifying Shampoos)

Lastly!! When rinsing your hair, always use lukewarm water to help keep the cuticle open in preparation for the protein treatment.
