How To Prevent Single Strand Knots

Also known as ‘fairy knots’ these tiny loops are often found near the ends of your kinks and curls. Even though we all get them and can’t banish them, here are some useful tips on what to do to minimise their existence.

WHAT CAUSES THEM

First of all, Single Strand Knots are very common for those of us whose hair is thick, curly and coily!

These hair types naturally loop and weave around each other because of their oval shaped follicles. Some other causes can be due to friction or manipulation during washing or styling.

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THEM?

You could always untie them…only joking ?

SSKs can be a sign that your hair needs a trim. We recommend doing so every 3-5 months on average – but not on a schedule. If you have one that you cannot undo, simply cut it off with hair scissors – not paper ones. Also, it is really important that you do not yank them out! Otherwise, this can cause damage to your follicles.

Here are some other practical prevention methods you can adopt to minimise Single Stand Knots:

PREVENTION 1

  • Twist/Braid your hair before bedtime
  • Detangle your hair more often. You can do this at the same time you re-moisturise
  • Limit Wash and Go’s
  • Use the praying hands method to apply your products

PREVENTION 2

  • Strech your ends – especially after Wash Day
  • Seal your ends with a Butter or Oil. Why not try our Ayurvedic Shea Smoothie – it’s literally food for your hair!
  • Apply Protective Style. Use low maintenance styles such as braids, buns and twists.

PREVENTION 3

  • Wash your hair in sections or hold the ends while cleansing
  • Detangle your hair before washing
  • Use a Satin or Silk pillowcase/bonnet or scarf at bedtime
