Looking After Straightened Natural Hair

Here at Natural Barnet we are very passionate on Natural Hair Tips to help you along your hair journey. We also appreciate that Natural Hair is very diverse and can come in many types, lengths and coils. This hair tip focuses on straightened Natural Hair and the best ways to look after/care for it.

TIME OF YEAR

The season you choose to straighten your hair will determine how long it will last. The peak of summer won’t fly work well as humidity will work against you.

The result will be a fast track to frizziness, therefore it’s best to wait until the Autumn/Winter season.

WRAP IT UP

Without fail make sure you wrap your hair every night as it sets your hair up for the following morning by adding volume and body. Alternatively, if you wanted to add more curl definition, you could either do a braid, twist or bantu knot before bed.

SOFT N BOUNCY

Avoid heavy products that will weigh your hair down. Try and use light oils and serums which will be ideal. While applying, only add products to the ends if your hair is fine. You don’t need to use too much products as a little goes a long way.

NO TOUCH UPS

This point is quite important as the repercussions could be severe. Make sure you stay away from any further heat during your temporary style. Particularly the most exposed apart of your hair which is your ends. By adding further heat, you can cause irreversible heat damage.

This why we stress the importance of night tine care and avoiding humidity.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR

As well as wrapping your hair before you sleep, it is important to wrap/secure your hair when you take a shower or during a work out (using shower caps, bun life etc).

Plus, you should do low intensity workouts to minimise sweating. Sweatbands are a great way to lay down your edges.

FRIENDLY ANTI-HUMECTANT PRODUCTS

Yes anti-humectant products are your friend. In its natural state, Natural hair needs water based products to stay moisturised. Unless you want your hair to revert back, keep them away.

We recommend you use light oils, whipped shea butter or anti-frizz products.

DRY SHAMPOO

Absolutely! This is an ideal way to refresh your hair and scalp between washing. Only apply to the roots of your hair to remove excess oil and to keep your tresses looking fresh.
